Heroic mine-sniffing rats are trained to smell the chemicals in landmines and help find them, saving thousands of lives.

There are several steps to the mine-finding training and testing:

1) Socialization with humans starting at 4 weeks of age

2) Click training for food reward

3) TNT-scent discrimination

4) Detection in soil/sand

5) Field training with deactivated mines

6) Final testing before being sent to countries for live mine detection

To learn more or to adopt and sponsor one of these special rats, go to APOPO.

Here is a sweatshirt you can get for supporting this wonderful cause.
